Fall 1973
Scouts were at his game from the scheduled apponents. John wasn't the fastest guy that could carry the ball but his willinness to keep on his feet and keep going is what made him good. They were in the locker room when O'Neil was talking to Joey about how his brother can't hang on to the ball and not fumble it. Joey was the last son at home after everyone else had married or left for school. Jon got taken out of the game for a bit but O'Neil had talked to the coach and he put him back in the game. During the game John scored four touchdowns. At the end of the game John was looking for Joey and when Joey saw him he had yelled thanks for my present John. It was Joey's birthday and he went through his presentsand on the floor lay a new baseball glove. He got a jersey from the coach with his name and the number 22 on it. Joey asked John if he had leukemia that night and John had told him the truth. He got four more touchdowns during the Ohio game. Penn State had an 11-0 season. John and Joey went to the hospital and a nurse told John that Mark had died the week before.
